Golf at the Highest Level
By Bob Diamond
In 1978, East Texas timber baron, Arthur Temple, gave a simple charge to Robert von Hagge and Bruce Devlin … design and build the best golf course in Texas. Temple wanted a layout that would make a great golf contribution to his beloved East Texas pine country, one that would give a gift of golf to thousands of golfers who had never before seen anything like a golf course of this level.
The course Temple imagined became Crown Colony in Lufkin. Architect Robert von Hagge and designer Bruce Devlin produced a golf course that has been honored by the Dallas Morning News as the#1 course in Texas four times since 1989 and has been in the top three from 1989 to 2003. The recognition continues with Crown Colony’s 2005 placement of Golf Digest’s Best Golf Courses in Texas -Top Ten Statewide. The 2005 Golfweek Magazine’s ratings of America’s Best, puts Crown Colony as the 72nd best course in the nation.Temple’s dream has come true.
Temple, a magnate in the timber and paper goods industries, would board a plane back then to meet his colleagues in New York, where a round of golf would usually be included as part of the business dealings. While flying back to Texas, Temple began to contemplate a top-notch course and business development where he could entertain clients and showcase the area’s economic progress. In the 70’s, vonHagge/Devlin were in the vanguard of course design, with such prominent layouts as a TPC course in The Woodlands. Temple had a highly scenic, rolling piece of East Texas property, dotted by 100-foot pines and several lakes. The stars had lined-up and they were shining on Arthur Temple.
In the years that have followed, Crown Colony has been praised for its beauty, test of golf, and character. By today’s standards, 6,692 yards from the championship tees is considered short. Instead of using measured yardage, Crown Colony has always defended itself with a lot of uphill wooded terrain, demands on course management and some of the best-rated par 3’s in the state. There are five of them. In particular, numbers 4 and 17 are beautiful but demanding. Both are full carries over water into tricky greens, without a place to bail. Hazards aside, the angle of your tee ball into each of these holes require shaping a shot and believing in your club choice. From the back, the full carry of number 17 (on the cover) is intimidating, despite the generous and green.
All of the holes at Crown Colony require excellent course management. The narrow driving areas on many holes suggest a fairway wood or long iron instead of driver. Several others require threading the needle with the tee ball between out of bounds and water that runs the length of the hole. The third hole is just such a set up. Most pros would call it a three-shot hole and be happy to card a par-5. The angle of the tee shot means driving over water to a fairway pinched-in by trees and white stakes. The second shot on this dogleg left has an even narrower landing area with the water still in play to the left. Your approach is into an undulating green that breaks hard toward the water. No wonder the third is ranked among the top 500 holes in the world.
Even at just 138-yards, the seventh is another of the five par-3’s at Crown Colony that demands respect. The green is only twelve yards, front to back. It’s also surrounded by three large bunkers that add up to more square footage than the putting surface. It’s a beautiful hole, and par is a good score here, too.
The front side concludes with a couple of straightforward par-4’s where a good drive leaves only short irons into the green. The break is over when you hit the tenth. Ten is a 437-yard slight dogleg right that demands hugging the treeline to the left for a playable angle into the green. The back pin placement is a “no-go.” It’s very narrow and has two tough bunkers guarding each side. Play for the middle of the green and get your par. It may only be a 5-iron into the green, but this is not a birdie hole.
A chain of bunkers and a winding creek make the next couple of holes, a par-4 and a par-3, both beautiful and challenging. Conservative tee shots are still required to prevent any damage. The 13th offers the first chance to “give it a go” on a reachable par-5. At 503-yards, the 13th is no lay-down, but the second shot is a manageable 230-yards. As long as your second favors the right, a good chip sets up a birdie opportunity.
The 14th is another of the demanding par-3’s. This green sits only 185-yards over water from the back tee box, but has a rock retaining wall which strongly suggests you hit it long – very much in the area of five bunkers. The good news is that the 14th is rated the easiest hole on the course.
Rates not far behind is the 16th handicap hole at Crown Colony - the signature 17th. Another forced carry, the 203-yard par-3 has been voted one of the “toughest holes in Texas.” The challenge is not so much the carry as it is the difficult putting surface. There is an elevated spine that sits at an angle and runs across the green. A back pin position requires a tee shot into that spine in order to slow the ball down or it will run through the green. The bunker on the right is deep and virtually guarantees at least a bogey. For all of its beauty and “high handicap, this little par-3 will make you pay attention and hope to get out of there with a par.
Although the par-3’s get much of the glory at Crown Colony, the par-5’s, especially the 16th and 18th ably hold their own. Although measured at only 481-yards, the 16th is still ranked number four in difficulty. A tee shot to the left side of the fairway sets up a decision to lay up 90-yards short of the green, in front of the water hazard, or go ahead and airmail it into a very narrow and well- bunkered green. This hole has teeth as a par-5, even if the yardage suggests otherwise.
The final hole at Crown Colony has all the challenges of length, sand and a demanding approach that you would hope for to finish a round on a great golf course. The locals say to use a 3-wood off the tee and lay up with a long iron. At nearly 600-yards, that kind of play seems to make little sense unless you’ve experienced the green. From even 250 out (we’ve just assumed a 350-yard drive) you’d need a laser to guide the ball between the pair of bunkers guarding the left and right of the green. If the pin is back left or right, par is still a good score if you hit the green in two. Have a whack with your driver, but experience says to play for position with the second.
The course at Crown Colony will leave you knowing that you’ve been through a test, not of traversing raw distance, but a test of course management and quite a bit of golfing self-discipline. It’s a challenge that you should not have only once. Recognizing that fact, Crown Colony routinely hosts parties of all sizes who want to stay overnight and have more than just one shot at this prize of a golf course.
Lodging is available at the Crown Colony Villas. The Villas (936) 637-8888 are on the property and built with group meetings and weekend golfing road trips in mind. Tennis, racquetball and pools are also on the property, as well as a first class practice facility.

Since the day it opened, one of the goals at Crown Colony has been to share the golf and beauty of East Texas with as many people as possible. During the last twenty-five years, Crown Colony has welcomed golfers from everywhere and amazed them with the challenge of the layout, course conditioning, attention to detail and the local gifts of natural beauty. This facility is two to three hours from the major populations in north and eastern Texas but is well-worth the time investment to play a golf course of the highest level in one of the prettiest areas in the State of Texas.
